17/18U Canada West Women win Bronze

By Bruce Edwards 02/14/2018, 10:30am MST

The Canada West 17/18U girls started their Volleyball Alberta Premier tournament season this past weekend in Calgary.  Having trained since early December and played in 2 pre-season tournaments, the girls were anxious to get on the court to play some more meaningful matches.

They started on Saturday morning by dropping a tough match to SAVC Flare, 0-2, and then lost their second pool match to the Cougars 18’s, who ended up 5th overall out of 33, 0-2.

This placed the team in a challenging situation to ensure they didn’t drop any more matches, and risk dropping into Div 4.

They finished day 1 with a convincing win over Sylvan Lake, with the team finally getting some positive results for all the hard work they had put in.

Sunday morning started against High Altitude VC from Sparwood, BC.  The girls were motivated to continue their solid play and cruised to another 2-0 win, ensuring that the team would stay in Division 3 for the next tournament.

The Blue Division semi-final was a tough one against Medicine Hat, who played an error-free match and beat CW 2-0.  This set up a bronze medal match for the girls against SAVC Storm.  Losing the first set 26-28 didn’t slow the girls down as they came back in the second 25-20 and then cruised to a 3rd set win 15-11, winning the first medal of the year for Canada West.

Congratulations girls!
